The
Nitride 101 Workshop
A compound
semiconductor technology video
covering the materials challenges and commercial hurdles
being overcome
by one of the fastest rising successes in electronics and photonics
history

Compound Semiconductor "Group III Nitrides"
are the underlying materials science technology phenomena behind
the new high brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs)
and laser
diodes that emit light in the blue segment of the color
spectrum. Until relatively recently, this feat was virtually
impossible. Nitrides are rapidly taking over more than just
blue as they move further into the entire visible and IR spectrum
regions as replacement for conventional white lights, CD and
DVD appliances, and are also under serious investigation as
powerful, environmentally attractive electronic devices.
This unique Basics-Taught-by-the-Pros workshop
was held live in San Diego March 1, 1999 and was led by Dr.
Robert (Bob) Karlicek when, at the time of the taping, was
with EMCORE Corporation. Bob is now with GELcore and his guest
instructors for this special event were two of the world's most
celebrated commercial nitride technology developers, Dr.
Shuji Nakamura, who at the time of the taping was still
at Nichia Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Dr. Steven DenBaars
a noted professor at UC Santa Barbara. Shuji is now a fellow-professor
with Steve at UCSB. Steve is also a founding VP of Nitres, which
is now owned by CREE, Inc. Nitres has since been renamed Cree
Lighting. EMCORE and it's joint venture partners, GELcore and
Uniroyal Optoelectronics were underwriters of the workshop video.
